You can retrieve your Gmail messages with a client or device that supports IMAP, like Microsoft Outlook or Apple Mail.
First enable IMAP in your Gmail settings, and the configure you email client.

POP, or Post Office Protocol, lets you download messages from Gmail’s servers onto your computer so you can access your mail with a program like Microsoft Outlook Express or Netscape Mail, even when you aren’t connected to the Internet.

Gmail accounts allows you to forward the email to a different email account and you can also download the emails to your preferred email software.
